BOX Baseball - Game 72 at Oakland

Game 72- Nick has been spending time as a spot starter and chief team comedian. Against the A's he rode to the rescue after Mike left the game early with an injury.

The A's jumped out to a 4-0 lead after 2 innings. Mike settled down in the third, but in the fourth left the game with a tweaked elbow. Nick came in and only allowed 1 run through 4 innings of relief. He held down the fort long enough to allow the offense to wake up.

For the 2nd game in a row there were no long balls from the BOX offense, but Chimpy was able to provide a spark off the bench in the DH role with a long triple in the third that got the BOX on the board. From there it was a series of singles at opportune times that got the BOX over the top.

BOX Baseball - Game 71 vs. Cincinnati

Game 71- The BOX played sloppy baseball for the first 6 innings before a late inning rally fell just short in a 6-5 loss to the Reds.

Laura was roughed up for 11 hits and 4 runs in 5 innings. It could have been worse as the BOX pulled off 3 inning ending double plays in her 5 innings (4 double plays for the game.) Of course it's hard to turn double plays when you can't keep the ball in the yard and both Adam Dunn and Brandon Phillips homered for the Reds. Dunn's 2-run shot in the 6th ended up providing the winning margin.

It almost didn't matter. The BOX plated 3 in the bottom of the 9th to pull to within one. They had runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 outs and MVP-candidate Kaylor at the plate, but after fouling off several close pitches he popped out to first base for the final out.

BOX Baseball - Game 70 vs. Cincinnati

Game 70- Chimpy labored through 6 innings and the bullpen blew an early lead but Ryno started the bottom of the eighth by hitting a homer off of Louie's favorite karaoke song (that's right, I just wrote a line that only I will possibly understand) to lead the BOX to victory.

Kaylor led the initial offense attack by homering in the second and again in the fifth for his 24th and 25th homers of the year. The BOX managed to plate 4 runs in the 4th by taking advantage of the first 2 walk inning we've had all year.

Chimpy gave up 8 hits in the first 5 innings but managed to only give up a single run thanks to two inning ending double plays. He even knocked in 2 runs in the 4th to help his own cause but left the game after giving up 2 more in the sixth. Alicia gave up the tying run in the top of the eighth, but ended up getting the win when Ryno started the 4 run rally in the bottom.

Note: Kaylor reached 25 homers and 75 RBI for the season

BOX Baseball - Game 69 vs. Cincinnati

Game 69- A couple of key hits gave the BOX the runs they would need as Katy put together another masterful pitching performance and Dayton beat their neighbors down I-75, 4-1.

Katy went 7 and a third and only gave up 4 hits. The only Reds threat was wiped out by a great fielding play by Ryno who started a 3-6-1 double play after making a diving stop.

The only time the Reds did score was because the manager accidentally let Jenny go to the mound to start the top of the 9th. One long double later Stella came in and one more double later the run had scored, but since it was charged to Jenny, none of our pitchers will really know about it.

Note: Dave left the game in the bottom of the 8th after injuring himself diving back into first after a line drive to second.

BOX Baseball - Game 68 vs. Boston

Game 68- Nick made his major league debut in an emergency start and the offense gave him all the runs he would need by putting up 4 runs in the first as the BOX avoided the sweep against the Red Sox by winning 7-2.

Kaylor and Ryno knocked in runs with back-to-back doubles in the first and Dave followed with a 2-run homer, his 4th of the year.

Nick looked good on the mound as he managed to get through the Red Sox potent line-up without giving up any long fly balls to Ram-Man. Becky and Alicia each pitched 2 innings of relief to close it out.

Notes - Chimpy was named NL Player of the Week after hitting .556 with 3 homers and 10 RBI in his 3 game DH stint... J.C. was sent down to make room for Nick on the roster... Kaylor continues to run 2nd at third base in All-Star voting. I'm still 3rd in the voting at second.

BOX Baseball - Game 67 vs. Boston

Game 67- Last game it was the unstoppable Boston pitching (and Manny Ramirez, who will henceforth be referred to as Ram-Man,) this game it was unstoppable Boston offense (and more Ram-Man.)

This was one of those frustrating games where the BOX had a lot of men on base, but thanks to the fussy baserunning controls there were a lot of guys lost running the bases. Since leaving Chicago, the BOX has not homered, but the Red Sox did hit two more (including the third of the series from Ram-Man.)

Notes- Jason Veritek has a terrible arm behind the plate and the BOX took advantage to the tune of 9 stolen bases.

 Manny Ramirez - pre-steroids

BOX Baseball - Game 66 vs. Boston

Game 66- One of those games where you have to remember this game was made after the 2007 season and therefore the Red Sox are awesome.

Josh Beckett silenced the BOX bats and pitched the 4-hit shutout.  Laura also pitched well but allowed a pair of solo home runs to Manny Ramirez (who may as well be named Babe Ruth (or Kaylor) in this game.)

The only BOX highlight was Manny Ramirez' second at bat when Laura drilled him in the head, thus becoming the first player this year to successfully hit another player with a pitch.

BOX Baseball - Game 65 at Chicago Cubs

Game 65- The BOX are going to miss Chicago. 3 games, 9 homers, 36 runs, and, most importantly, 3 easy wins over the hapless Cubs.

Ray allowed a solo homer in the second. The BOX hitters went quietly in the first 3 innings, then they got loud. Real fast. Matt, Chimpy, and Kaylor hit back to back to back homers to start the inning. Then Ryno and Dave got singles. Joey followed that up with a 3-run homer. 6 batters, 6 hits, 4 homers, 6 runs, and the game was over.

Ray allowed one more solo shot over 7 innings and Greg closed out the game.

Notes: Two players had a shot at the cycle in the eighth inning. Matt needed a triple and flew out. Chimpy only needed a single, but grounded out. No one in the majors has hit for the cycle yet this year.

BOX Baseball - Game 64 at Chicago Cubs

Game 64- Chimpy sent a ball over Sheffield and into the Addison Red Line station. Kaylor hit one into someone's backyard on Waveland. Yep the wind was blowing out again and the BOX took advantage for a 9-4 win over the Cubs.

For all the power on display my favorite run of the game came from Ken. With Werley on second, Ken hit a soft liner to center. Werley tried to score on the play and beat the throw home. Ken is slow enough that when he tried to go to second on the throw home, the catch tried to throw him out. Instead of making it to second the ball flew into center field where the centerfielder was no where to be seen. Ken took advantage of that situation to scramble all the way around and score.  Sadly, the Cubs scorer did not credit him with an inside the park homer.

Katy pitched well enough to win and Alicia picked up the save by pitching the final 4 innings.

BOX Baseball - Game 63 at Chicago Cubs

Game 63- The wind was blowing out today at Wrigley and Alphonso Soriano took advantage when he led off the bottom of the first with a home run. That was the last thing that went right for the Cubs.

Ryno made a triumphant return to his hometown by hitting two homers and Chimpy took advantage of the start at DH by knocking a ball on to the roof of a building on Waveland as the BOX batted around twice in a 15-4 demolition of the Cubs.

Fuzzy bounced back from the rough start to pitch 7.1 solid innings. Stella closed out the game.

Notes: Kaylor is still second in the most recent all-star voting despite leading the league in homers. The fans are dumb.

BOX Baseball - Game 62 vs. Chicago White Sox

Game 62- It all started with Jim Thome's magical broken bat.

The game was tied at 3 in the bottom of the 7th. Alicia was facing pinch-hitter Thome with a runner on first. She got a good pitch inside on Thome that broke the slugger's bat in half.  Unfortunately, snapping a bat in half was not enough to stop the ball from landing a couple of rows into the right field stands. The next batter also homered. That as all for Alicia.

J.C. came in and should have gotten out of the inning, but a user error, when I whiffed on a ground ball that should have been fielded easily, extended the inning and another homer, this one a 3-run shot, put the game out of reach.
