BOX Baseball - Game 79 vs. Oakland

Game 79- Sometimes you just keep swinging for the fences and it works. Other times you swing as hard as you can and screw yourself into the ground by missing. Luckily this interleague game against the A's was the former.

After Ray had a rough first inning where he gave up 2 runs, Ryno hit a solo shot in the second to cut the lead in half. Dave followed with a solo homer in the fourth to give the BOX a 4-3 lead, and Kaylor capped the scoring in the sixth with a 400-foot blast to right.

Ray gave up 9 hits in 5 innings, but with the help of some timely double plays only gave up 3 runs. The bullpen shut it down the rest of the way as J.C., Nick, and Cbug only allowed one baserunner over the last 4 innings.

Notes- Dave was named player of the game for his efforts... I watched Blade Runner while playing this game. I know it's supposed to be a SciFi classic, but I just don't get it. I mean, it was ok, but not outstanding.

BOX Baseball - Game 78 vs. Cleveland

Game 78- Laura pitched an acceptable 6 innings and Kaylor went yard again as the BOX stopped a two-game losing streak by beating the Indians 6-3.

Kaylor's 28th homer of the year put the BOX ahead to stay after the Indians had taken a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth against a tiring Laura. Having a tired pitcher is nothing new for the BOX at this point. All but two pitchers in the bullpen are pitching below full stamina. The BOX added 2 more runs in the inning for the 6-3 final margin.

Becky pitched two shut out innings before handing the ball over to Cbug who pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to secure her 26th save.

Notes- Ken and Joey both left the game with injuries after making diving attempts in the field... The BOX did not make a single fly ball out to the outfield in the game but did fly out to the catcher four times... Kaylor just missed his 29th homer of the year when he doubled off the top of the wall in the seventh... I had trouble finding scouting data about Indians starter Fausto Carmona on baseball-reference.com because "Fausto Carmona" is no longer listed after it was discovered this past off-season that he had been using a fake birth certificate for years.

BOX Baseball - Game 77 vs. Cleveland

Game 77- So since the last time we played the number of DiMarco children has expanded by 100%. Also, I'm a little rusty.

The Indians play long ball twice. Once in the first off Mike and again in the 10th off Bill. In between, the BOX offense left enough runners in scoring position to turn the game into a loss.

Notes - The BOX has lost 4 of its last 7... This was the first game played since February 28th.

BOX Baseball - Game 76 vs. Cleveland

Game 76- CC Sabathia made the BOX look silly for 8 innings and a last ditch rally fell short as the BOX lost to the Indians 7-5.

Fuzzy got the start for the BOX and didn't pitch well, giving up 5 runs on 10 hits in only 5 innings. It was his first game in 6 days as fatigue continues to be a problem for the entire BOX pitching staff. His patented "Fuzzball" was flat all night, allowing the Indians hitters to really tee off.

Meanwhile, the BOX offense was also mostly missing against Sabathia. The only real threat was Ryno to made "good contact" all four times at bat but ended up with 2 warning track fly outs and a double before finally getting to Sabathia with a homer in the ninth. It was Rynos third straight game with a home run, but even after Chimpy added a pinch hit 2-run shot to chase Sabathia two batters later, it was too little too late.

Notes: Samantha became the third girl baby to pitch for the BOX this season when she made her debut after relieving Fuzzy... Matt and Kaylor continue to run in second place in the all-star voting at their respective positions... Dennis Hopper just showed up in the movie I'm watching, that should make it awesome. Although I think I've seen this already... This game was made so long ago that Cliff Lee and CC Sabathia were still pitching for the Indians.

BOX Baseball - Game 75 vs. Cleveland

Game 75- In the middle of their longest stretch without a day off all season, the BOX needed a strong pitching performance from Katy K. What they didn't know is that she'd also end up providing some offense too.

After allowing a game tying hit in the top of the 4th to Indians pitcher Cliff Lee, Katy came up with 2 outs in the bottom inning and smacked a line drive into right that scored Werley to give the BOX the lead for good. On the mound Katy allowed 3 runs over 6 innings and improved to 10-0 on the year. She should be the leading candidate to start the all-star game.

The BOX offense wasn't all Katy. Ryno and Kaylor both bombed 400-foot plus opposite field homers. Ryno went 3 for 4 on the day and finished a triple short of the cycle.

Notes: Bill Heaston pitched 3 innings to pick up the save on the day he was called up from AAA to get a fresh arm in the bullpen... Samantha Miller (Ryno's girl kid) also got called up for a fresh arm... Jay and Stella got sent down for a few days.

BOX Baseball - Game 74 at Oakland

Game 74- It only took one game to get back in the swing of things. (pun!) After managing only one goal (watching hockey on the other tv!) in the first game back from 8 months away from the BOX, this time we put 2 on the board in the first followed by 2 more in the third. Who was the guy in the middle of it all? BOX MVP Kaylor of course.

Kaylor knocked in the first run of the game with a double and then, after making solid contact multiple times in the last two games, finally got enough of one in the third to go oppo for his 26th homer of the year. Ryno immediately followed by pulling one into the upper deck of the cavernous McAfee Coliseum to put the BOX up for good.

Jay got the emergency start at pitcher as the BOX was forced to go to a pitcher by committee approach to the game after a tsetse fly epidemic at their Oakland hotel led to an outbreak of sleeping sickness among the BOX starting staff. Jay, Becky, Stella, and Greg worked together to hold Oakland to 3 runs over the first 8. Cbug came on to pitch the 9th and despite allowing the tying run to come to the plate managed to close it out for her 25th save.

Note: Joey fell victim to a 2 goal in 14 seconds Flyers outburst when I got so distracted by the hockey game that I forgot to pause the game during his at bat. He struck out on 5 pitches with me only looking up in time to see the final one cross the plate.

BOX Baseball - Game 73 at Oakland

Game 73- Everything was rusty after a long time away from BOX baseball. Swings couldn't get loose. Ray was tired after the 4th inning. No hits were strung together, and in spite of all that it was still all tied at 1 headed to the ninth.

Ryno hit a one out double, but Dave followed up with a strikeout and Joey grounded out to end the threat. In the bottom of the ninth the BOX was victimized by a controversial foul ball that the ump called fair. Then they were further victimized by me forgetting how to make the outfield play in. A dumped single into the outfield was all she wrote.

Note: Despite being 30 games over .500, the BOX is only 4-7 in Saturday games.
