BOX Football - Game 6 vs. UCF

Game 6- The Knights of Central Florida are coming to Stade BOX Left for a special Friday night game. Prime time national TV slot on an off night for college football can mean only one thing... the return of the BlackBOX uniforms!

It's a dark and stormy night in Dayton... Look out for the highlighted player Darin Baldwin from UCF... he had ONE TACKLE last week! Be very afraid!

1st quarter-
We get the ball first, and I'm just going to go ahead and call it right now... the rain will cause at least 2 fumbles tonight.
The first problem with the rain is not a fumble but a pass that just slips out of Nick's hand on 3rd and 8. Laura kicks a FG and the BOX leads 3-0.
Jay tries to intimidate Central Florida by making the tackle on the kick-off. It doesn't work. With relative ease they make their way down the field and take a 7-3 lead.
I'm remembering now that we barely escaped with a win against these guys last year. On top of that rememberence I notice that UCF has brought their band to the game. They're taking this very seriously.
Jandy drops what would have been a 30-yard completion. Nick immediately demotes him to "sit-in" wide receiver.
So far we're unable to stop them on the ground or in the air, otherwise things are going great. 93-yard TD drive for the Knights. 14-3.
Another dropped pass leads to another punt. The Monkey has instructed all receivers to start using stick-em.
Have no fear, I am here! Tight man coverage + press coverage audible + WR screen call = my 3rd TAINT in the last 2 games. 14-10 at the end of the 1st.

2nd quarter
I think the black uniforms may have backfired as I'm having trouble finding our defensive players on the field.
We still managed for force a punt, NO! It's a fake! And I come off the corner to stuff the upback and strip the ball! Ryan (not Ryno) scoops it up and runs it all the way back for the Touchdown! BOX 17-14.
Just to summarize, over the last 5+ quarters, our offense has scored 2 touchdowns and our defense has scored 6.
Next drive JC makes a leaping pick. The D is officially on fire.
The same can not be said for the offense as it's a 3 and out, but our other offense (the D) forces a punt after Mike Baum makes perhaps the first ever BOX 'big hit' that leads directly to an injury for the other team.  The UCF starting running back must be made of paper.
The next drive ends with a 40-yard FG by Laura. BOX 20 - UCF 14.
Look out, it's the double QB blitz. The QB panics as Joey and I close in and throws up a short pass right into Woodyard's hands. It's another BOX defensive TD! 27-14
Almost come up with another turnover, but the booth overrules the fumble.
UCF moves inside the 10 and looks like they're going in for a touchdown to end the half until Mike Baum makes a diving open field tackle, strips the ball, and recovers it all in one motion. Of course if he had taken the time to stand up before recovering the ball, he probably could have run it back for 6.
But if Mike had returned the fumble, then Werley wouldn't have gotten to take the next play 92-yards for a TD. Bob beats single coverage on a corner route and outruns everyone to the endzone. 34-14.
Crap, I got hurt diving at a guys ankles. The only positive of my injury, for the first time all year, I heard Brad Nessler say my name. He expects to see back in the game soon.
Another UCF fumble overturned by replay. And I've got hip bursitis which, if I understand correctly means the bursa sacks in my hip are inflamed. Who the hell is our team doctor?

3rd quarter-
Ray stops the opening drive of the 2nd half with an INT at our 1-yard line.
Old Lee Corso just rips PJ after he drops a pass over the middle (a linebacker drilled him just as the ball got there.)  This could be proof of that popular internet theory about how Lee Corso hates Phillipinos.
Bill steamrolls the QB for a sack after Katy tackles the RB on a play action screen pass.
UCF gives the BOX a taste of their own medicine after a pass bounces off of Tommy's hands straight to a UCF linebacker who breaks 2 tackles and runs in back for 6. 34-21.
The Knights get another INT and are in good field position, and then inexplicably punts on 4th and 1 from our 35. Touchback.
Yikes, there's Nick's 3rd INT on the last 3 drives.
But it doesn't matter as I intercept the next pass and take it to the endzone for my 4th TD in the last 2 games. I'm assuming now that I'll go into next week the favorite for the Heisman.
41-21 at the end of 3.

4th quarter-
We're 1-8 on 3rd down on the day and still lead by 20.
2-8 now, completion to Kaylor.
PJ dives under the offensive line and into the endzone. We're 1 for 1 on red zone trips! 48-21.
Coaches in the conference have been complimenting JC on his "great lateral movement."
Shalvi just about beheads a guy on 3rd and 9 to break up a potential 1st down.
Considering we have 48 points, Jay has done a lot of punting today.
Werley could have had another 90-yard TD catch, but he drops a ball that hits him right in the hands.
Game over man.

It's another comfortable win for the BOX and our high scoring defense. After falling behind 14-3 we outscore UCF 45-7 the rest of the way.

The Play of the Game is the fake punt-strip-touchdown return.
I was named Player of the Game from my 8 tackle (1 TFL), 2 INT, 1 FF, 2 TD afternoon.

BOX Football - Game 5 Highlights

Highlights from our 51-20 smash real good of UTEP:

UTEP falls for the play action pass. Watch for Kaylor's nice block and Louie's unnecessary hurdle.

Pete hits the QB and the ball pops out right into Ray's hands. Ray heads straight to the endzone.

A lot like the last play, but replace Pete with Bill (nice move around the O-lineman) and replace Ray with Shalvi (nice high stepping to the endzone.) Watch for Woodyard completely taking out an offensive lineman who had no chance of catching Shalvi.

Agati and Ryno meet at the QB. Getting the idea that our defense was pretty good this game? The BOX defense had 4 TDs, the offense had 2. Also look for Katy's fancy footwork to step over and around the fallen QB.

My 2nd TAINT in the last 3 minutes of the game. I actually broke a tackle which is how you know most of UTEP had stopped trying. The only one still trying was UTEP #2. Check out how much slower and shorter I am than that guy. Another 5 yards and he would have smashed me good.

BOX Baseball - Game 49 at Arizona

Game 49- Sweet Jeebus, this new better hitting AI apparently has heavy duty rubber banding built in.  For the second game in a row we jump out to a comfortable early lead and for the second game in the row the D-bags come back with relative ease before winning with a walk-off hit.  This time the BOX lost 8-7 in 10 innings.

Becky got a surprise start, by which I mean it was really a surprise. I'm almost positive the game said Ray was going to start, which makes sense seeing has he is actually a starting pitcher.  Three batters into the game I realized the long-haired person on the mound was not blond enough to be Ray. Becky was solid, pitching out of major trouble in the 1st and third and leaving the game with a 7-2 lead.

That 7-2 lead came behind the continued Herculean effort by Kaylor. He homered for the 5th consecutive game, this one a 2-run homer to straight away center in the 1st. We strung together a bunch of singles to put up 4 in the 4th and were looking good.

At least we were looking good until Jay gave up a 3-run homer in the 7th and then Alicia gave up a 2-run homer in the 8th. After a one inning reprieve in the 9th, Greg continued our sieve-like bullpen efforts in the tenth when he gave up a game ending 2-out single to C.Burke, who I can only assume based on his .154 batting average, is actually Chris Burke from the TV show Life Goes On.

Luckily we built up a pretty good record before I upped the difficulty, so hopefully this rough patch will even out once I figure out how to keep from giving up big leads every time we go to the bullpen.

BOX Football - Game 5 at UTEP

Game 5 - We're headed to the Sun Bowl to take on undefeated UTEP. The pregame highlight focusing on the UTEP QB who have over 400 yards passing and 6 TDs last week. Gulp.

1st quarter-
UTEP wins the toss and elects to receive. They've played right into our hands!
The Sun Bowl is actually kind of intimidating.
Woodyard is back, I know this because a UTEP WR just broke his tackle attempt and picked up a first down.
Ray strings out their 1st run attempt of the game and forces a punt.
We immediately return the favor.
We have trouble with tight ends. Big game for UTEP.
Bill comes up with a key sack on 3rd down and pushes then out of FG range. They attempt a punt from the 34-yard line and punt the ball through the uprights.
Nick and Louie combine to beat the blitz for a 64-yard TD pass! Kaylor throws a key block that springs Louie, who was left uncovered by a blitzing LB. BOX 7 - UTEP 0.
First play of the next drive, we blitz and Pete knocks the ball out of the QB's hands. Ray catches it in the cruises in for the score. 14-0.
MRBaum forces a fumble with a huge hit on 3rd down, but UTEP recovers and falls forward with the ball to pick up the 1st down. Bad luck.
More bad luck, Ryno goes down with an injury on another UTEP completion to the TE.
Ryno has a bruised knee, but will return.

2nd quarter-
UTEP completes their drive with a dive over the pile. 14-7.
We go 3 and out, but Jay bombs a punt and drops it at the 3.
Agati blows up a play in the backfield leading Corso to comment that he is so big and strong that he's impossible to block with just one guy. Go Agati!
We're going for it on 4th and 6 at the UTEP 34. What could go wrong? Well an incompletion for one.
Our Defense is our best offense! Bill's pressure off the corner leads to a desperation pass which Shalvi intercepts and high-steps into the endzone. BOX 21 - UTEP 7.
Bill has his 2nd sack of the game and UTEP punts again.
Laura adds a FG as the clock runs out to end the 1st half. BOX 24 - UTEP 7

3rd quarter-
With a chance to really put the game away with a strong drive to start the 2nd half, instead we go 3 and out after a Kaylor drop.
I follow that up by whiffing on an INT and giving up a big gain.
Then we blitz on a 5 wide package, but Bob doesn't get to the QB fast enough and it's a UTEP TD. 24-14.
The BOX responds with a solid drive that would have been a TD except there's a UTEP safety who must run a 2.5 40 passed on how quickly he was able to close on a wide open Werley.
Laura hits a 34-yard FG. BOX 27-14.
Katy and Ryno both have sacks to stall out the next UTEP drivie.
They run a fake punt on 4th and 20. Sometimes the AI is dumb.
Werley makes a big catch to put in the red zone and then Jandy gets open in the slot for the TD. 34-14.

4th quarter-
Ryno's got his 2nd sack of the game. UTEP QB looks rattled.
The "rattled" UTEP qb immediately drops in a perfect pass for a long TD pass. 34-21 7:10 to go.
PJ gets hurt on a run up the middle. 4th quarter and PJ gets hurt? Shocking.
Oops. UTEP fakes a blitz, drops into a zone and drops right into Nick's passing lane. INT gives UTEP the ball at the BOX 43.
Ryno stuffs them on a big 3rd and 3 and then Bill stops the run on 4th and 2. Turnover on downs. Now we just need to not turn the ball over.
PJ is back in but now Dave is hurt picking up a 1st down as we continue to kill clock.
Jay comes in and nails a 50-yard FG to put this game to bed. 37-21.
And now it's really over. I come up with a pick and even break a tackle on the way to the endzone. It's our 3rd pick 6 of the game and it's 44-21.
Nick is named player of the game.
Did I say it was really over? I guess now it's super really over as I bring back my 2nd interception in the last 2 minutes. The game is held up for 3 minutes while I catch my breath in the endzone. 51-21.
UTEP finally gives up and stops passing.
Final score BOX 51 - UTEP 21

Nick is named player of the game.
My 2nd ridiculous TAINT is named play of the game.

BOX Football - Game 4 Highlights

Highlights from our hard fought 28-19 win at Tulsa:

Nick ties the game at 7 with a 5-yard TD run.

Joey seriously turns the momentum of the game by jumping the curl route. The Pick 6 gives the BOX a 14-7 lead. Highlight is especially grainy due to heavy rain.

Dave extends the BOX lead to 21-13 by fighting through the goalline D.

Katy picks up another big sack to slow down Tulsa comeback effort.

I finally put Tulsa to bed with the twisting INT. Check out how I dismissively toss the ball away after the pick. That's my revenge for 2003 Tulsa!

BOX Football - Game 4 vs. Tulsa

It's raining cats and dogs for this Conference USA match up versus Tulsa. JC gets the nod from the broadcast crew (I guess when you're ranked 18th your games get put on TV) as the player to watch in this game.  Specifically they say JC will need to "bring the wood" against a talented Tulsa running back. Heh heh, wood.

Joey and I have taken lots of caffeine pills before this game even to avoid reenacting DJ Stelly's moment from the Dayton/Tulsa 2003 NCAA Tournament game.  That will probably prove to be unnecessary since the game today starts at 12:30 pm.

1st quarter-
We win the toss and kick off.
Woodyard is out this game with continuing complications from back spasms. I'm reminded of this when Ryan (as opposed to Ryno) makes his first tackle of the game.
After converting on a 4 and 12 it's a quarterback keeper on the option. Touchdown Tulsa. 7-0.
The Tulsa D is all over the field! It seems like they've got 14 guys out there each play. It's a BOX punt.
Their QB has been studying the BOX game tapes. Twice on the next drive the QB scrambles for 1st downs. That's our play!
Lucky for us their kicker misses a 36-yard FG wide right. That makes 4 straight FGs opposing kickers have missed.
The 1st quarter ends with the BOX offense finally moving the ball, but trailing Tulsa 7-0.

2nd quarter-
Dave is wide open in the flat with no one between him and the end zone! One problem, the rain-slicked ball goes right through his hands.
That drop is immediately followed by an INT. Uh oh. Might be one of those days.
More evidence... Ryno breaks in untouched to the QB, dives right at his chest... and bounces off. Incomplete pass, but should have been a sack.
I make a key 3rd down "tackle" by barely shoving the running back out of bounds. Corso says I "whammed off my block." I was not being blocked.
Our first option pitch of the day is pitched directly into the ground. Dave recovers.
We work the ball down to the 23 when... it's a blitz! and a fumble! and Tulsa ball! Not Nick's best game so far.
Apparently our secondary once again spent a large part of the week talking about how we were going to dominate Tulsa's receivers.  They bring this up immediately after Ryan gets beat for a 35-yard completion.
5 straight FG misses as Tulsa's kicker is no where close on a 40-yarder. We're still only down a TD.
And now we're not! Nick scrambles it in from 5 yards out after a 77 yard drive nicely mixing runs and passes. With :50 to go in the 1st half the score is tied at 7.
Jay is fired up and gets the kicker tackle!
The BOX D bends but doesn't break at the end of the half. Which is surprising. I don't want to say we're having a tough day on D, but so far the Tulsa QB is 16 for 18 for 195 yards and 1 rushing TD. In other words, we're lucky that the score at the half is 7-7.

3rd quarter-
Starts with another Nick INT on a ball I was trying to throw out of bounds. I guess I don't know which button that is.
Game Changing Play! Everybody's All-American Joey jumps a curl route. The ball hits him so hard in the gut that he's already 15 yards down field before he has to put his hands on it. Pick 6! Dayton 14 - Tulsa 7
Bill finally takes out our frustration on the Tulsa QB. Unfortunately it's after the ball is in the hands of a Tulsa receiver. 15-yard penalty leads to first and goal Golicanes.
Touchdown Tulsa! Except they go to the booth and he only gets one foot down! Of course this is college, so the catch is good. Touchdown. But they miss the PAT! BOX 14 - Tulsa 13.
Can we kill 11 minutes by running the ball?
Well, we didn't quite kill 11 minutes, but we have the ball at the 2 yard line following 8 straight running plays. PJ attempts to Phlying Phillipino in from the 2 and gets knocked out of mid-air and out of the game with an injury.
Dave lowers his head and shoves his way in for the score.
With 15 seconds to go in the third: BOX 21 - Tulsa 13.
PJ has a bruised shoulder and will be back. Erin Andrews sounded relieved that nothing was broken.

4th quarter-
1st play of the 4th: 65-yard TD Tulsa! Ray gets beat by their fastest guy.
The 2-pt conversion is stopped by me! What the hell am I doing tackling a running back? BOX 21-19
3 and 8, it's a blitz! Nick recognizes it and escapes the outside pressure and takes off for 35 yards and the first down.
4 plays later and Dave follows his blockers for a 10-yard TD run. Two drives, zero passes, 2 TDs. Not a good day for the receivers, but right now we'll take the 28-19 lead with 4:46 to go.
Katy K. starts the next drive with a sack.
On 4th down MRBaum knocks away the Tulsa pass. Turnover on downs.
We can't pick up a 1st down, but kill 3 running plays worth of clock.
Tulsa gets it back down 9 with 1:47 to play.
Game over man! Game over! After 2 long no huddle completions, I come up with the INT to seal the game. Man, I had a nice night.
PJ and Dave combine for the final 1st down and Nick kneels it out to end the game.
Final Score BOX 28 - Tulsa 19

Dave was named Player of the Game.
Joey's Pick 6 was (rightfully) named the play of the game.
It was more of a struggle than I expected. The rain (blame it on the rain) really messed with our passing game, but once we stopped throwing the ball midway through the 3rd our offense was able to put points on the board. Probably not going to pick up too many votes in the polls with this win.

Apologies to T-Bird for not getting him the 3 TD receptions that I promised.

BOX Baseball - Game 48 at Arizona

Game 48- Kaylor stays ridiculously hot and we beat up Randy Johnson.  Yep, those would be the top stories from this game if Stella and Charlotte didn't combine to blow a 7-2 9th inning lead on a walk-off 3-run homer as the D-bags defeated the BOX 9-7.

Kaylor bashed a 1st inning homer of Randy Johnson and Fuzzy cruised through 7 innings as the BOX took a comfortable 7-2 lead.  The newly increased computer difficulty appeared to have no affect.

Until the 9th. Stella gave up a double to start the inning, but then struck out the next batter.  That would be the last out the BOX would get. The next 6 guys reached base.  It was probably the manager's fault that Stella was left in as long as she was, but our bullpen was tired and I, er I mean the manager, thought she'd be able to buy them some rest.  Charlotte came in with runners on 1st and 2nd with the score 7-6 and gave up a game ending homer on her first pitch.

Notes- Kaylor has 6 homers in the last 4 games... Dave left the game after diving into the fence after a foul ball in the 7th

BOX Football - Game 3 Highlights

Highlights from our semi-miraculous 24-21 overtime win at Louisville.

Louie makes his first TD catch of the year.

Oops. Nick probably should have just taken the safety.

After reviewing the play it was determined that Werley definitely did break the plane.

Towards the end of the 4th quarter in a tie game, Bill gets the sack on 3rd down to push Louisville's FG attempt back. Their kicker ended up missing and we went to OT.

1st play of overtime, Pete has his only tackle of the day. If you're going to have just one tackle, you may as well strip the ball too. Ryno recovered. 4 plays later Laura hit the game winning FG to cap off the comeback win.

BOX Football - Game 3 at Louisville

I stepped in some dog shit while picking up broken tree parts knocked down as part of Chicago's weak ass "Storm of the Century," but didn't realize it until I was about the start the game and wondered why it smelled so much like crap in my living room.  Let's hope the BOX is not inspired to also stink it up.

The BOX goes on the road for the first time this year. It's off to Papa John's Stadium to take on Louisville.

1st Quarter - The BOX gets the ball first, and 3 plays in Jandy goes down with an injury.
Jandy's back is spasming, he'll be back.
Nick to Louie for a 18-yard TD. You can't play zone against Louie, he'll always find the hole.
Louisville goes 3 and out after a Ryno sack.
After we also go 3 and out, Woodyard drops a sure pick-6 but then makes a good tackle on 3rd down.
3 plays after fumbling (an O-lineman recovered) PJ is still so ashamed of his fumble that he runs face first into a flying shoulder tackle. He's hurt.
7-0 BOX after one.

2nd Quarter - Apparently the flying tackle hit PJ in the thigh, he'll miss a quarter with a thigh bruise.
Laura is just short on a 48-yard FG.
Now Woodyard is hurt. (6th player to get hurt this game)
Bob's back is all jacked up and he's going to miss at least the rest of this game with spasms.
Ryno gets his 2nd sack of the day forcing a punt which is downed at the 2.
2 plays later it's a pick-6 for Louisville. Oops. 7-7.
The next drive looks like it's going to stall on 3rd and 20 until Kaylor makes a spectacular falling on his head catch at the 1.
Unfortunately all we do from there is lose 3 yards and settle for a FG. 10-7 BOX
Settling for a FG may have been a mistake. Louisville 2-minute offenses their way right into the endzone after I completely blow a 3rd down coverage. Louisville leads 14-10
As an added bonus, Nick throws an INT trying to make something happen at the end of the half, luckily Louisville bounces the FG attempt off the upright. Halftime Louisville 14 - BOX 10

3rd quarter - Starts strangely. Louisville completes 3 straight passes and still has to punt.
BOX punts it right back.
Louisvilles running back gets hurt (8th of the game) and they punt. Greg (9th) gets hurt on the return.
We try to run the WildBOX and Dave gets squashed for a loss of 4.
Greg has a spasmy back, but he'll return.
Maybe football just isn't our game. After throwing the 2nd pick-6 of the day we challenge Louisville to a spelling contest. Louisville 21-10
Either Louisville has resigned Elvis Dumervil for this game or our offensive line stinks. After 2 more sacks we're force to punt. It's not looking good.
Jay downs it at the 2, but we let them right out of the hole.
We are definitely losing the battle in the trenches. Just counted to 8 mississippi before Louisville QB had to throw. By that time a guy had gotten open.
End of 3. Down 21-10

4th quarter - We dodge a bullet when Louisville misses the FG.
Bullet undodged. 4th INT of the day and that should just about do it. On the plus side, Tommy ripped down the guy who made the pick by the facemask and knocked him out of the game. (10th injury)
Baum refuses to quit! INT. Time to call in a few favors with the officials.
Unfortunately we can not move the ball and are too deep in our own territory to go for it on 4th and 2. Punt. Really up shit creek now.
The only thing keeping us in the game is Louisville's terrible kicker. He's 0-3 on FGs.
There is hope! Nick leads a no huddle quick strike drive downfield and hits Werley with a 15-yard TD pass and then scrambles it in for the 2-pt conv. 7 plays 65 yards, only 1:00 off the clock.  Louisville 21 - BOX 18 with 4 minutes to go.
The D forces a 3 and out! (after Shalvi drops a sure INT, doh!) BOX gets the ball back with 3:38 remaining.
PJ busts a 40+ yard run on 2nd and 5 and now I'm worried about scoring to quickly.
Yep, this could be a problem.  After PJ's run the Louisville D holds and we settle for a 31-yard FG from Laura. Still 2:11 left. Way too much time. 21-21.
Ugh, sickening. Louisville QB bounces off a sack from Bill, then injury sub Ryan (not Ryno) covers the wrong part of the field in zone D. BIG Louisville completion.
But the D holds. 1st and 2nd down run stuffs and then on a huge 3rd down Louisville calls a screen pass but never gets the ball off. Bill with the sack! One minute to go, we're out of timeouts and it comes down to Louisville's terrible FG kicker from 48-yards. No way he misses this one.
It's long enough... but it's wide left! NO GOOD!  BOX ball at our own 31.
We pick up one first down but then out of time outs have to spike the ball and then throw two incomplete passes. Meanwhile, a guy with a chainsaw just pulled up in front of my house.
Punt to our 5. Looks like OT.
They actually try to run a play and lose 3 yards (so close!) We're going to overtime.

OT - We win the coin toss and go on D.
1st play of OT, AND THE BALL IS LOOSE! Ryno is on top of it! What a play by Pete!
If you guessed we were not going to throw the ball, you are correct. PJ run for 6. Dave run for 6. Dave run for 6. Dave hurt on the play (11th player this game.)
I call a time out before our play to change the strategy to HOLD ON TO THE BALL, before trying to run PJ into the middle of the line to set up a FG.  Guess what happens next?
PJ FUMBLES!!
But the center is there and picks the ball up off of PJs neck to get the recovery and keep the game alive.
Oh, and we go to the booth and it turns out PJ didn't fumble afterall, he was already down.
Laura drills the 23-yard FG and the BOX pulls the comeback victory on the road out of their ass!
Final score - BOX 24 - Louisville 21 in OT.
It's an ESPN Instant Classic with a score of 517. I don't know what that number means, but hey, 517!

Ryno was named Player of the Game.

BOX Baseball - Game 47 at Philadelphia

Game 47- Kaylor finished his systematic destruction of Phillies pitching by hitting his 5th homer in the last 3 games as the BOX rose to a new challenge in a 7-5.

Bill Heaston got a late call-up from the minors to start as everybody else was tired. Mike took the short trip down. Bill Sanders got his first save of the year despite giving up 5 runs over the last 3 innings.  Werley went wild on the base paths and twice stole second and third.

Notes: After going 36-10 and opening up a 10 game lead in the division it seems that things were a little too easy, so I messed with the settings to move the computer hitting up to expert level. The computer pitching level was left alone for now because we're 3rd to last in the league in runs, but if we keep averaging 7 a game I may mess with that too.

BOX Baseball - Game 46 at Philadelphia

Game 46- In real life the Phillies eliminated the Cincinnati Reds from the playoffs. Video game Kaylor is getting revenge in the best possible way, by becoming a one-man Phillie-wrecking machine.

Kaylor hit his 3rd and 4th homeruns in the last two games, that latter a tie-breaking 3-run shot in the top of the 8th that just cleared the Undercat sign in right-centerfield. Earlier he hit a 2-run homer to straight away centerfield off Adam Eaton in the 3rd.

Katy returned to the mound for the 1st time since coming off the DL and pitched 5 innings of shutout ball.  She was in line for the win until Jay gave up Pat Burrell's second homer in the last two games (he's half a Kaylor!) and Greg allowed the tying run to score in the bottom of the 7th.  Stella got out of the 7th inning jam and picked up the win after Kaylor's 8th inning heroics.  Alicia pitched the final two innings for the save.

BOX Baseball - Game 45 at Philadelphia

Game 45- If only this had been the Phillies' most embarrassing performance of the day. Kaylor west 4 for 5 and slammed 2 homers as the BOX pounded out 17 hits and beat the Phillies 8 to 3.

Mike pitched 6 decent innings but even more importantly had the first triple in franchise history as part of a 6 run 3rd inning of Philies starter Scott Mathieson.  Joey started the third with a walk and was forced at second for the first out of the inning. Nine batters later, Joey made the last out of the inning by grounding out to first. In between, the BOX hit for the cycle as Kaylor homered, Mike tripled, Ryno doubled, and a couple of people singled.  Mike got the historic triple by lining a ball over the head of a drawn in centerfielder and then running like hell.

Becky pitched the final 3 innings to pick up her first save and lower her ERA to a ridiculous 0.24. She also got her first hit, an RBI double that finished the scoring.  Kaylor's second homer of the game was measured at 521 ft and crashed into the giant scoreboard behind the left field stands.

BOX Football - Game 2 Highlights

Tommy was so surprised to find himself open that he almost forgot to run into the endzone.

Hopefully the BOX opponents will never learn to cover Jandy in the slot near the endzone.

Werley carries defenders to the endzone until he fumbles. Then while lying on the ground Louie jumps on his back and pushes the pile back onto the ball in the endzone.

Apparently no one told the Miami QB that they were running a screen pass. Katy K. leads the charge of 6 BOX defenders. Check out the excellent form on the tackle.

Nick had left the game with in injury, so PJ ran the rest of the game as QB out of the wildcat. This led to the first successful end-around in the history of video game football as Dave went in for the final score.

BOX Baseball - Game 43 & 44 vs. Arizona

Game 43- Fuzzy was masterful until his elbow blew up. The BOX overcame Randy Johnson, despite leaving 9 runners on base. Kaylor smashed a 475-foot homer off the scoreboard behind the left field bleachers. Charlotte closed it out with a 1-2-3 ninth.

Game 44- Our pitchers elbows are apparently made of crepe paper as now Ray has to leave the game in the middle of his start after tweaking his elbow.

For the first time this year our defense actually came into play. Joey committed an error early but it didn't lead to any runs. Thus inspired, I booted a double play throw in the 8th that led to two runs and had another ball deflect off my glove in the 9th (it was ruled a hit) that led to an additional run.  With two outs and two on the tying run came to the plate. Cbug, who thought she was going to have the night off, came in and promptly gave up a long drive to centerfield. Werley got a great jump on the ball and ended the game with a diving over-the-shoulder catch, probably the defensive play of the year so far.

Notes: Dave probably should have had our first triple of the year, but he got caught up watching Ryno chug all the way around from first on his 7th inning double. Jenny almost hit her first homer of the year but missed the top of the wall by about a foot. She then got thrown out at home on Woodyard's double because apparently she's not very fast.  Ray had two sacrifice bunts that led directly to our first two runs. 8 of our 14 hits were doubles. 5-game winning streak. Fuzzy named NL pitcher of the week.

BOX Football - Game 2 vs. Miami (OH)

Another beauty of a day at Stade BOXLeft as the Redhawks come to town.  When we originally scheduled this game it looked like an opportunity to beat up on the local patsy down the road.  Then Miami went out in week one and upset Florida in Gainesville.  That was unexpected.

We're on TV for the 2nd week in a row and the pre-game guys focus on a Miami LB.

1st quarter -
Miami gets the ball first and picks up a first down on a 3rd and short but hold on...
Flag on the play. Holding. March it back 10 yards and then on 3rd and 10 the Miami QB tosses up a duck which I settle under for the INT.  BOX ball!
Nick to T-Bird for a 17-yard TD. After so many drops by the TEs T-Bird was so surprised when he caught the ball at the 5 that he didn't start running again right away. BOX 7-0.
After the kickoff I find out apparently Nick got hurt on the play. Strained neck, should return shortly.
Miami does not take kindly to being scored on. 5 plays later they drop a pass in right over my head for a long TD. 7-7.
The tie doesn't last. 5 plays back the other way and Nick hits a wide open Jandy for a 21-yd TD. BOX 14-7.
The Miami QB passes 100 yards with 2 minutes left in the 1st quarter. This is more impressive because we're only playing 8 minute quarters.
But on 3rd and 3 Miami makes the mistake of trying to run the ball. Pete sees it coming and drills the RB for a 2-yd loss.

2nd Quarter -
Oops. 3rd and 10 Miami blitzes and Nicks off-balance throw is intercepted. Miami ball at the 30.
Miami moves the ball close enough for a FG. BOX 14- Miami 10.
After several successful Dave and PJ runs, Nick hits Werley on a quick slant.  Werley gets hit at the 6 but drags 2 tacklers towards the endzone. He stretches and...
FUMBLE! Bob drops the ball at the 1-foot line. The ball rolls into the endzone. Louie dives for it, and ends up pushing the entire pile up forward enough so that Werley ends up right on top of the ball. TD! 21-10.
3rd and 1 Miami, they run a counter and MRBaum flies in from the safety position and blows up the play.
We try busting out the Outside The BOX offense, but PJ's wildcat pass is batted down at the line. Sad.
Then the drive stalls. Laura hits a 37-yd FG. BOX 24-10.
D forces a 3 and out. Going to get it back with 1:40 in the half.
Miami has not scouted the "send everyone right, run left" play. 1st down at the 3.
Ouch. Kaylor is down after landing on his head while trying to catch a cross in the endzone.
3rd and goal. No one is open so Nick takes it in himself for the TD. BOX 31 Miami (OH) 10.
Kaylor has a hip, but is expected back.
Miami drives all the way down the field, has 1st and goal at the one but gets stuffed with 6 seconds left. Even though they're trailing by 21, they kick a field goal. What a bunch of wusses.

3rd Quarter -
The question everyone was asking at halftime: How the hell did these guys beat Florida?
The news just gets worse for Miami. They're starting running back got hurt on the goal line play at the end of the half and will not return.
Nick hits Jandy in the endzone! but Jandy gets blown up, drops the ball and doesn't get up. Strained abs. Should return.
Laura hits a 33-yd FG to restore the 21 point lead. BOX 34-12
Another 3 and out followed by another Laura FG. BOX 37-12.
On the ensuing kick off Jay comes up with his tribute to Tecmo and makes the kicker tackle.
Shalvi then forces a bad throw which Woodyard intercepts.
At the end of the 3rd this one is all over but the stats. BOX 37 Miami 13.

4th Quarter -
Hope you had Laura as your fantasy football kicker. She hits her 4th FG of the day from 47. BOX 40-13.
After Werley lets a long gainer go right through his hands, Jay actually comes on to punt for the 1st time all day.
Katy K. gets the 1st BOX sack of the day.
Miami's back-up RB then busts a 73-yard TD run. The Monkey chews out the defense.
Dave recovers the onside kick.
Nick gets hurt again as we officially enter stat-padding time.
Laura's 5th FG of the day. 43-20.
Another long Miami TD. Apparently our D has gotten bored. 43-28.
This time Nick does not come back out so we run all WildBOX offense with PJ at QB.
5 plays later PJ hands it to Dave on the end around and it's 50-28 BOX.
MRBaum forces a fumble which Ray recovers and returns 20 yards before HE fumbles it. Luckily it rolls out of bounds. One last chance to run it up.
WildBOX offense doesn't work so well this time, but Laura does hit her 6th FG of the day.
Final score - BOX 53 Miami (uh OH) 28.

Play of the game is the first Nick to T-bird TD.
Laura was the Player of the Game.
Stats are here.

The only lingering question is how badly is Nick hurt.

BOX Football - Game 1 Highlights

All-American Joey grabs his first INT of the year. He's so good, he only needs one hand:

Freeze frame one-handed evidence:

Nick to Jandy for the first BOX TD of the year. Jandy got lost in the slot and was wide open for the easy TD:

After a long off-season of rehab, it's the triumphant return of PJ as "The Phalling Phillipino:"

Joey's 2nd INT of the day. This one is a pick 6:

The icing on the cake. Nick to Werley for the final score of the game:

BOX Baseball - Game 42 vs. Arizona

Game 42- Laura went 6 innings on the mound, but it was her work in the batters box that helped the BOX take out the D-backs 6-2.

Trailing 1-0 in the 2nd, Ken led off the inning with a single. Laura tried to lay down a sacrifice bunt, but ended up beating it out for a single. A rattled Micah Owings allowed the next 3 BOX hitters to reach base and by the time the inning was over the BOX had batted around and scored 5 runs.

Laura pitched her way out of jams in the 1st, 4th, and 5th innings before leaving the game in the 6th with elbow pain.  Greg and Bill allowed one hit over the last 3 innings to finish the game.

BOX Football - Game 1 vs. Cincinnati

It's 74 degrees on the last weekend of August (suck it global warming!) at Stade BOX Left as the 2010 season gets underway.  Kaylor is highlighted in the pregame show as a key for Cincinnati's D.

1st quarter -
Jay kicks off to start the year!
Woodyard comes up with our 1st trick play of the year... Cinci is about to pick up a 1st down when Bob dives at the RB's ankles causing him to jump backwards to avoid the tackle. In the course of jumping backwards the RB jumps back behind the 1st down marker and runs out of bounds... BOX football is smart! Followed by a 3rd down stuff.
PJ is back! and doesn't get hurt on his first run of the year!
Dammit. Cincinnati has scouted my favorite play (send everyone right, scramble the QB left.) Punting time.
Jay drops his 1st punt of the year at the 2.
WTF!!! Woodyard forces a fumble at the 2... Cinci O-lineman scoops it up and rumbles for 33 yards.
(this game better get less exciting soon, too many notes.)
Hold on a minute, there's a booth review: Turns out the runner was down! back to the 2.
All-American Joey has the 1st INT of the year. A leaping one-handed grab.
BOX takes advantage of the TO to score the first TD of the year! Nick to Jandy from 10 yards out. 7-0 BOX.
Jay apparently took leg steroids over the summer and is bombing kick-offs into the endzone.
End of the 1st, still 7-0.

2nd quarter -
Ryno knocks down a pass at the line. The Cinci QB must be very short.
Herbstreit says once you find the hole, you should just keep pounding it in there.
So we do. Methodical drive leads to PJ from the 2. 14-0 BOX.
Cinci responds by once again going 3 and out.
We go for it on 4th and inches at midfield and BAM! PJ gets stuffed. Hope this doesn't get the Bearcats fired up.
Oops. Bearcats angry. Bearcats smash BOX D. 14-7. The Cincinnati TD was scored by unfortunately named I. Pead.
Uh oh. Nick throws his first pick of the year after a Cinci LB puts on a jet pack to grab a ball 6 feet over his head.
Crap. Long TD pass = tie game. 14-14.
Driving down field to try to take the lead at the half, Nick takes a big sack and we've got our 1st injury of the year!
Nick has a bruised elbow. Laura nails a 34-yard FG as the half ends. BOX 17-14.

3rd quarter -
2 plays into the 2nd half and Nick is down again.
3 and out.
After MRBaum drops what would have been a pick-6, Corso explains that he has lousy hands (that's what she said!)
Nick must be ok cause he's back in after a Cinci punt.
4th and inches from the same point on the field, Corso starts questioning my manhood if I don't go for it. Obviously, we punt.
Jay punts it out of bounds inside the 1. Up yours Corso!
Cincinnati goes play action and completes a 99-yard TD pass. Up mine! Cincinnati 21-17!
Another INT gives Cinci the ball back in BOX territory. Officially worried now.
BOX dodges a bullet when the Cinci FG hits the upright and bounces away.
At the end of 3: Cincinnati 21-17.

4th quarter -
It's the return of the Flying Phillipino! (Only this time it's more like the Falling Phillipino) PJ from 1-yard out. BOX leads 24-21.
Everybody's All-American!!! Joey takes the next Cinci play back for a TAINT! 2 TDs in 13 seconds. BOX 31-21.
Cinci marches right back and scores: 31-28.
After slamming our way to 3 running 1st downs with PJ and Dave alternating carries. Nick hits Werley on a little curl that Werley turns into a 31-yard TD reception! BOX 38-28. 2:34 to go.
The D steps up big time and forces 4 straight incomplete passes. Two of the passes were knocked down by Dime Back Ryan Levine. Good thing The Monkey talked him out of transferring to Illinois.
Now to kill the clock.
PJ is named Russell Athletic Supporter of the Game.
Laura drills a 32-yard FG. 41-28 BOX leads with :52 left.
Mike drops his 2nd INT of the game but otherwise the game ends without incident.
Joey's Pick-6 is the play of the game.
Final Score: BOX 41 - Bearcats 28. The BOX takes home the Cin-Day Road Memorial Road Kill.

BOX Football 2009 - One last look back

Just to give you an idea of how the BOX Football posts will work.  Here's a look back on our final game of 2009, when an undefeated BOX team took on West Virginia:

#4 BOX vs. #14 WVU

This is the highest ranked team we've played all year... that should work out fine.

1st quarter:
WVU takes the opening kick off and marches right down field. D tries to lay out lots of big hits which leads to lots of WVU leaping over would be tacklers.
D finally holds up once WVU gets inside the 5. 3 plays inside the 5, 3 stuffs = 3 points on WVU FG. 3-0
Bad news right away on offense, I hoped PJ would be back for this game but his abdominal tear is still 1 week away from being healed.
1st play of the game... down goes Dave.
It's only the wind knocked out, Dave returns 2 plays later.
We move the ball 50 yards down field but lose a fumble on an option play. Uh oh.
Katy K. sack leads to WVU punt. She's really turned it on the last couple of games.

2nd quarter:
Louie makes a catch and lands directly on his head. WVU is physically abusive so far.
2 straight sacks = BOX punt.
Uh oh-er. Screen pass + CB blitz = long WVU touchdown. 10-0
The BOX takes a page out of the WVU book... a couple of passes to running backs moves us downfield. Dave rumbles in from 7 yds. 10-7.
WVU runs the same RB screen and only a desperation wrestling match allows me to barely shove the RB out of bounds.
WVU 4th down conversion on the next drive leads to the most infuriated development of the day... WVU has a old-timey redneck complete with coon skin cap on the sidelines cheering them on.
The redneck is doing a handstand. Not good. 17-7.
The redneck is drinking moonshine from a jug. INT return for a TD makes it 24-7. All the things that went right during the season are going wrong now.
and now the redneck is doing one-arm push ups as they drive down for another FG before the end of the half. 27-7.
Well, the good news is we get the ball first in the second half. The bad news is we have to play the second half.

3rd quarter:
TD! Oh shit, it's for West Virginia. They're just blitzing the shit out of us then intercepting the desperation throws. 34-7.
Summing up the day thus far, Werley drops a TD pass when it hits him in the wrong part of the hands.
4th and 22 conversion to Mike! Followed by Dave's 2nd TD run of the day. Nick punches in a 2-pt run. 34-15.
And we force a 3 and out! Here comes the BO... d'oh. 1st time I've seen this all year, Greg drops a fair catch. WVU recovers. The miracle is ovah.
The "strip ball" option for defense is completely worthless. We had two big stops on D only to have facemask penalties called. BOOOOOO.
Halfback screen again... to quote Hudson: "Game over man. Game over!" 41-15. This is like when Hawaii made a BCS bowl a few years ago.
3rd INT for a TD on the day. Time to pull the starters. 48-15.
They have a guy with 5 sacks.

4th quarter:
Guh... 20-yard 3 down conversion to Mike until... fumble. WVU ball. I've started drinking.
Running a lot of no-huddle = everyone tired = Joey gets a 3rd down reception (and then decked.)
Also due to crazy no-huddle - T-Bird playing center, Louie playing guard. I think the team is broken.
Dave has his 3rd of the day. 48-21
Happiest moment of the day: the WV running back who has killed us all day (who's still in the game BTW) just got hurt. I hope you die.
Icing on the cake... one more fumble by Nick (his fatigue meter was in the red the entire 4th quarter.)
Final score WVU 45 - BOX 21

What a disappointing end to our dream season.

7(!) turnovers to 0 is going to make it tough to win a game, especially when all 3 INTs were returned for touchdowns. Can't wait for next year's effort at a more difficult schedule.

Bah.
